Additionally, they often don’t have a physical office or legal registration, increasing the risk of scams or unsafe experiences.

On September 29, 2025, Ecuador achieved a landmark environmental accomplishment: UNESCO approved the expansion of the Galápagos Islands Biosphere Reserve, incorporating the Hermandad Marine Reserve into the system of protected areas. This decision adds nearly 60,000 km² of new marine territory under protection, consolidating Galápagos as a global benchmark for marine biodiversity conservation.

This expansion brings the total protected area to approximately 20.6 million hectares, covering both terrestrial and marine ecosystems of immense value. The international recognition not only strengthens Ecuador’s leadership in conservation but also highlights Galápagos’ vital role in the health of the world’s oceans.

The incorporation of the Hermandad Marine Reserve creates a biological marine corridor that connects Galápagos with other international reserves, such as those in Costa Rica. This corridor will protect critical migratory routes for iconic species such as hammerhead sharks, sea turtles, and manta rays, boosting ecosystem resilience against threats like climate change and illegal fishing.

The expansion designates two types of zones: around 30,000 km² where all fishing activities will be prohibited, and another 30,000 km² with partial restrictions, such as banning longline fishing. These measures aim to balance conservation with scientific research, providing safe spaces for studying marine species and monitoring ocean dynamics.

The giant tortoises of Galápagos are much more than a symbol of the islands: they are true guardians of the planet’s natural history. Walking among them feels like stepping back in time, encountering creatures that have inhabited these islands for hundreds of thousands of years and continue to amaze travelers from around the world.

Their mere presence conveys calmness and wisdom. With slow and steady movements, these tortoises can live for more than a hundred years, and some have even surpassed 150. Their size is equally impressive: some individuals weigh up to 250 kilograms, making them the largest land tortoises on Earth.

One of the most fascinating curiosities is the diversity of their shells. Depending on the island they inhabit, their shape adapts to the environment. In wetter areas, their shells are dome-shaped, perfect for moving through low vegetation. On the more arid islands, many tortoises developed “saddleback” shells, allowing them to stretch their necks and reach higher plants. This adaptation was crucial for Charles Darwin to understand how species evolve according to their environment, providing one of the key insights that shaped his theory of evolution.

However, life has not always been easy for these giants. For centuries, they were hunted by sailors and threatened by invasive species such as goats and rats, which destroyed their habitats or preyed on their eggs. Fortunately, today, strong conservation programs led by the Galápagos National Park and the Charles Darwin Research Station have helped restore several populations. A famous example is the tortoise “Diego,” who, thanks to captive breeding programs, helped save his species from extinction on Española Island.
